NEWS - Maserati GranTurismo Sport

One of my favourite cars, and a hidden gem in the soft-supercar market, was the Maserati GranTurismo S. As a result I was excited to hear that its replacement had been revealed. I was even more excited when I laid eyes on it! Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the Maserati GranTurismo Sport will form part of the MY13 range.

In order to make the Sport stand out there has been some exterior restyling and a host of technical features. A 4.7-litre V8 will power the car, pumping out 460PS and 520Nm or torque. This will allow a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of nearly 190mph. Not bad at all for a car which will likely carry a price tag of less than £100,000.

The suspension is the Sport Skyhook system which uses continuous damping to improve reactiveness. In sport mode the car sharpens up to give the driver a more involving experience. In normal mode, the continuous damping means that the ride can be more comfortable, giving a good all-round handling ability.

Some of the cosmetic changes include Daytime Running Light (DRL) LED's which are becoming increasingly popular as a styling feature. Behind 20" alloy wheels lie Brembo brakes; 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at the back. Expect the GranTurismo sport to have some serious stopping power. The calipers themselves come in oxidised blue; just another little sporty detail.

The exteriour colour seen in the photos is a new colour called "Blu Sofisticato" and it just looks superb. It really shows off the lines of the car, and matches the calipers well.

The interior has seen an ergonomic makeover, with the seats and steering wheel being improved as a result. This is all done with the aim of keeping the GranTurismo a major part of the Maserati lineup; they accounted for 44% of Maserati sales last year.

The GranTurismo S was a handsome yet agressive looking car, and its replacement looks to have taken this to the next level. The GranTurismo Sport is definitely a car to consider with your £100,000 budget!
