On September 1st it was off to Wetherby Racecourse for the test day held by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Find out how I got on...
The weather was glorious upon arrival and all the cars were lined up ready for the journalists to test. A brief registration and breakfast started the day.
After this it was on to the manufacturers tables; each mere feet away from each other. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet the PR personnel from some of the big manufacturers. All kitted out in branded shirts and jackets they were all very friendly and welcoming. Each manufacturer had brought one or two cars to test, and heaps of information and spec-sheets.
There was just one problem being that I was slightly too young to drive most of the vehicles on offer. This didn't mean the day was wasted, as I got to make a lot of new and valuable contacts, and did manage to get a drive in a few cars. These included a Honda CR-Z hybrid, Fiat 500 TwinAir and Suzuki Swift DDiS.
As well as this I was able to get passenger rides in the two Porsche's available, driven by Porsche's own driving consultants. Most notable was the demonstration of the launch control in the Panamera Turbo; the kick-in-the-back acceleration almost takes the air out of your lungs and 0-60 is dealt with effortlessly.
All in all the day was a huge success and I look forward to working with the people I met and hopefully going back next year, when I will be old enough to test most of the cars on offer!
